Originally a 12th century Anglican church, St Leonard's was extended and restored in the 14th and 15th centuries. The current Gothic revival structure is impressive and highly ornate. The 1870s saw a large overhaul of the church, including adding gargoyles and redecorating the nave and updating the organ among many other things. The current interior is definitely Victorian looking. The ceiling is wood panelled, the pews and pulpit are ornate and stately. There are many monuments and plaques inside, including the imposing Throckmorton family tomb. There are a handful of memorial to the World Wars as well.Very nearby is the Tortworth Chestnut, a magnificent specimen thought to be nearly 800 years old.
Love the cream teas every 3rd Sunday of the month between April and September. Their parishioners very welcoming. A small church packed with interesting historic items.Don't miss the the 400-year old Oak tree preserved on its grounds. Fantastic Gloucestershire country views.
